Royal Gala raises $ 15,000 for the Food Bank

MOCAAPI, the Monmouth & Ocean County Chapter of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin had their second annual charitable gala, the "Royal Gala" here on Sunday night. More than 200 physicians and healthcare leaders from the two counties and outside dignitaries were treated with royal cuisine, culture and hospitality. The annual event, started last year at the same venue - the magnificent Shadowbrook, raises funds for the local charities.

Amongst the dignitaries attending the event were, NJ Assemblyman & Deputy Speaker, Mr. Upendra Chivukula and Dr. Poonam Alaigh who happens to be the New Jersey State Commissioner of Health & Senior Services. Dr. Donald Cinotti, the President of the Medical Society of New Jersey was an honored guest. He was accompanied by Dr. Niranjan Rao, the President Elect of the Medical Society and Dr. Wayne Foster, the President of the Ocean County Medical Society.

Ms. Stephanie Bloom, the Chief Executive Officer, from Community Medical Center stole the show in her fabulous traditional Indian outfit for the evening. Community Medical Center, along with St. Jude Medical and Ocean Renal Associates were the proud sponsors.

Dr. Ajeet Singhvi, the President of AAPI and Dr. Sunita Kanumury, the President Elect of AAPI were also present to address the attendees.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who was unable to attend, sent his best wishes (see letter) recognizing theDr. Cinotti, President MSNJ efforts of MOCAAPI towards helping the community. Senator Bob Singer and Assemblymen Dancer and Malone passed a Joint Legislative Resolution at the NJ Senate and General Assembly recognizing and honoring the efforts of MOCAAPI. This was very proudly received by the members.

The evening started off with a grand cocktail reception at 6:30 PM. The guests took the opportunity to check out more than a dozen fabulous gift baskets which were being auctioned in a silent auction for charity. The winners were announced later on during the dinner by Dr. Chakrapani Prakash and Usha Prakash while Assemblyman Chivukula was kind enough to honor the winners.

The formal part of the evening was introduced by Dr. Neelu Jain-Lakhani promptly at 8 PM. Dr. Anil Gupta, President of MOCAAPI, then addressed the attendees. He highlighted the challenges that all players in the Health Care industry were facing in taking care of patients with compassion and dignity, and yet be able to support their staff and families. He stressed the importance of a continued, active and committed cooperation amongst all players in the health care sector in order to succeed and develop innovative solutions. He assured that MOCAAPI and its member physicians recognize their responsibility to help develop and support our local communities. He announced that this years Gala would be able to donate at least 15,000 dollars, if not more to the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean counties.

Dr. Poonam Alaigh, who was present in her personal capacity then briefly addressed the attendees and promised to come back in her official capacity for an in depth discussion on health care policies. Dr. Donald Cinotti, MSNJ President highlighted the role that the Medical Society was playing during these challenging times for physicians. The evening was kept lively by Drs. Sripad and Sunita Dhawlikar who played out the role of the MC to perfection.

Dr. Vinod Sancheti, Past President of MOCAAPI, was honored by Dr. Anil Gupta with an 'Outstanding Service Award' for his ongoing contributions to the MOCAAPI's cause and mission since its founding in 2002. Dr. Ajeet Singhvi, President of AAPI pleasantly surprised the organizers by graciously coming in along with Dr. Shashi Shah, Chair AAPI Charitable foundation, to recognize Drs. Anil Gupta and Vinod Sancheti for their efforts.

Guests enjoyed the spectacular and colorful dance performance from the famed "Satrangi" dance troop and then danced all through the evening with friends and enjoyed the delicious Indian cuisine from Moghul.

An evening of such magnitude is put together by the efforts of several dedicated individuals. Dr. Gupta thanked the efforts of Archana Sharma who along with her team consisting of Dr. Shalini Gupta, Dr. Neelu Jain-Lakhani, Jigna Patel and Jyoti Gupta, put together the entire evening. Dr. Chak Prakash and Usha Prakash put together the very first MOCAAPI souvenir book which showcased the efforts of MOCAAPI. Dr. Sunita Mann than thanked all the attendees and the gracious sponsors and donors who helped raise all the funds for the benefit of the Food Bank.

All in all, it was a job well done and well appreciated by everybody. Thank you all.
